Executive summary
On Monday 1 June 2020, Young Visionaries hosted an inaugural 'Visionary Hangouts’ 

online meet up/webinar.

The theme was: “How to Craft Your Life Vision”.

The aim of the webinar was to create awareness on the importance of vision casting
and the power of vision.

With a key focus on the youth and to have youth centred hangout, for the youth-by the youth, the panelists were all youth aged below thirty years.

The Webinar consisted of the following participants:


-Eric Muriithi, an ICT student and software developer
-Daniel Kirongothi, a student of Architecture, artist and environmentalist
-Carolyne Gathuru, Young Visionaries team member, hosted the webinar alongside
-David Maeri, -Founder of Young Visionaries
-Tess Muthoni, co-founder at Young Visionaries spoke on self-care


The Visionary Hangouts was attended by 32 participants, which was quite an impressive feat, it being the very first hangout.
The hangout was well attended, with attendees engaged in discussion and contributions throughout.
 
It was a successful hangout and a promising start to many more, with a plan to host these on a monthly basis.

An opportunity was provided for feedback by both panelists and guests and success and areas of improvement were well noted towards delivering webinars of great quality and value.

Introduction
On Monday 1 June 2020, Young Visionaries hosted an inaugural Visionary Hangouts online meet up. The theme for this Visionary Hangouts  was  “How to Craft Your Life Vision”.

This theme was settled on with a view to challenging young people to think about their vision and purpose in life and to provide an introduction to how to go about it.



Through this document, the term 'webinar' shall be used interchangeably with the word 

'online meet up' to refer to mean the same thing.


Body
State problem
As part of our mission statement we seek to solve problems that are affecting youth.

  • Kenya has 10.1 million millennials out of a population of 49.7 million.
  • Data from the census 2019 by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) states that 5.7 million Kenyans (75.1%) are below 35 years.
  • 85% of unemployed people in Kenya are youth.
  • Suicide is the leading cause of death among 15-29 year olds in Kenya.
  • Unemployment, Mental health issues amongst a host of other social problems plague Kenyan Youth.


Young Visionaries aims to solve these problems by offering essential life skills such as vision casting.

The  ‘Visionary Hangouts’ webinar series by Young Visionaries are designed to offer a platform for knowledge and skills acquisition as well as self-expression for the youth.

 




Identify background
Our target audience is the Kenyan youth, aged 14 years to 25 years.

We aim to reach youth from all walks of life no matter their social-economic status.

Young Visionaries goal is to reach youth all over Kenya.

Part of our one year objectives is to reach 1000 youth in the years 2020-2021, with the message of vision, purpose and leadership.

The Visionary Hangouts series is part of the strategic activities undertaken by Young Visionaries to reach the 1000 youth.

 





Summary of Webinar/Online Hangout

The aim of the webinar was to inform people on the importance of vision casting and the power of vision.
The webinar was aptly titled “Visionary Hangouts” because it was designed to have an informal feeling that provides the audience a safe space for expression and contribution.

With a view to having an event that focusses on the specific target group, it was key to have youth centred hangout, for the youth-by the youth. Bearing this in mind, the panelists were all youth aged below thirty years.

Eric Muriithi, was one of two guest youth panelists. Eric is an ICT student and software developer, who shared his experience of developing his life vision, the challenges of making the choice for his professional studies as well as his lifelong passion for soccer. He shared with the audience navigating through parental advice versus the desire to follow one’s dreams

Daniel Kirongothi was the other of two guest youth panelists. A student of Architecture, artist and environmentalist. He shared his experience on finding his career path and combining his passions to impact the community as well as the journey towards dabbling in different career areas to experience them in order to inform his choices.


Young Visionaries team member and co-foudner, Carolyne Gathuru, was the programme facilitator alongside Founder of Young Visionaries.
David Maeri cohosted the event. The facilitators hosted the webinar with great energy and activities that kept the attendants engaged throughout. Part of the activities involved a competitive cognitive awareness activity that tested the participants memory and attention to detail where the winner was to be awarded with a prize from Young Visionaries..

Tess Muthoni, co-founder at Young Visionaries spoke on self-care, sharing her personal journey of finding her life vision and the need to focus on self and care for self in order to care for others


Participants were taken through an insightful presentation by David Maeri on the importance of vision, that included tips on what it takes to create a vision and the discipline required to deliver it, with inspiring examples and quotes that resonated with the audience.



Awareness Creation

Three main strategies were employed to create awareness to enable outreach to young people to attend and derive value, including:

1. Leveraging on the existing audience of the panelists to attend the webinar

2. Leveraging on Young Visionaries existing social media platforms to capture attendees

3. Creating opportunities to reach out to more participants through the attendees of the first webinar


 

 


OUTCOMES

Qualitative Outcome

·       The feedback was overwhelmingly positive as a poll indicated that the largest majority of attendees said the discussions were insightful and they will consider attending the next one.

·       Attendees were engaged and interactive with questions and comments shared on the chat facility as well as by speaking directly.

·       Participants were moved, touched and inspired by the 4 presenters and indicated their sentiments after each segment.

·       There were requests for the presentation on how to create one’s life vision to  shared by the presenter including the inspirational quotes therein.

·       The event drew attendance from guests of all ages including young people and those young at heart indicative of the wide reaching effect of the theme and message.

·       Participants shared that thee aura and atmosphere of the hangout was friendly and encouraged sharing and that the activities were fun and engaging.

 

 

Quantitative Outcome

·       The target audience for the webinar was at least 30 guests and the event at its peak drew
35 participants.
The message on the importance of vision and how to go about crafting it thus reached at least over 30 participants during the event.

Discuss Findings
The Visionaries Hangout by Young Visionaries created a much needed platform for young people to express themselves.

It gave the youth a platform to share their life journey and how they are overcoming challenges on Vision.



Conclusion

The hangout was well attended, with attendees engaging throughout. All in all, it was a successful hangout and a promising start to many more.
There is an apparent need to create avenues for young people to engage in constructive activities that will provide them guidance and direction towards being visionary leaders in their spheres of influence.

 

 


Next Hangout:


The next Visionary Hangout is slated for 4th July 2020 at 7:00pm with the theme
“What’s Your Super Power” aimed at navigating through the career decision making maze and providing an exploratory opportunity to discussion talent and passion.
